Generalization. A general statement or concept obtained by inference from specific cases.
Don't we always practise this unnecessary and ugly action?
When we say that women are to stay at home and be caregivers to children, are we not generalizing? When we say that Singaporeans are kiasu, are we not applying the concept of generalization? When we say that students from top school behave very differently from those from neighbour schools (Or, at least, that's what they claim those schools are.), are we not generalizing?
Without being conscious, we always bring out the outstanding observation to refer to the whole class. When we say that women are to stay at home and be caregivers to children, we use the trait in several women about them being more caring and apply it on all. So, if I were to use the idea of generalizing, I would say that all men play soccer well and all women can be great nurses.
However, is this true? I don't think so.
Why be that rigid and square-brained? I hate generalization. It is driving me mad. Very very mad, in fact. I dislike the idea that I have to perform to what is expected. The expectations do not come from the things I can capable of; its from another source. It being stated makes it obvious.
So, before you speak, do check whether you are expecting something from one because it seems right for him/her to perform as that or whether you are expecting something because you believe he/she can perform to it.
Do the guessing, ponder on the topic and you will be amazed that at reading my blog, you have exercised your mind.
